The first five years of Jill’s dance production studio have come to an end, and the pair are still happy to be here.
After the initial excitement of opening a dance studio in Brooklyn, Dara says they realized the real world would not be what it was and they had to take a step back.
“I had to step back and see what we were really capable of.
It was definitely a struggle to figure out what the real, live world was like,” Jill says.
“We’re still really happy and excited to be back, and that’s all that matters.
We’re still here.”
Jill’s first dance studio opened in 2009 and Dina’s studio opened later that year, and they both moved to New York City to pursue their careers.
After moving to New Orleans, Jill decided to take her studio’s first steps with an electronic music group, making the jump from club to recording studio and then eventually moving into her own studio, The Dance Studio, in 2015.
“In a lot of ways, we felt like we were on our own for the first time,” Jill explains.
“There were things that we wanted to do that we didn’t have time to do.
That was very liberating.”
Dara has been at the forefront of the dance production scene for nearly two decades, and says the transition to DJing has made her feel like she can do whatever she wants.
“It’s definitely been an adjustment.
I’ve had a lot to learn,” she says.
“[But] I feel like I’ve learned so much, and now it’s all about getting better.
I feel so much more confident and at ease.
I’m really glad to be part of this community, and I hope to be a part of the rest of the industry.”
Jill has been working with a variety of producers in her life, including artists such as Jammie Thomas and DJ Premier, but she says her biggest source of inspiration is Dina.
“Dina is so inspiring.
She’s just such a wonderful person, and she’s one of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with.
I could never do anything without her,” Jill concludes.
“She’s just so incredible.”
Jill also points out that she has been lucky enough to work with some of the best dance producers in the world, and Dinas music will always be her inspiration.
“The people who’ve worked with me in the past have done amazing things.
That’s what really motivates me,” Jill adds.
“That’s what’s going to keep me going in the future.”
